#DiscoverDL:"An Illuminated Valentine: The Roots of Romantic Love"

by  Born 2 Move Movement Adventures

Program image

Join “An Illuminated Valentine” for a foray into distant times and lands, from ancient Rome, to Medieval Provence, France and England; by way of the Renaissance in Central Europe, to the Romantic and Modern eras. We sample perspectives and sentiments of love by the troubadour Bernart de Ventadorn, the poets Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles d’Orleans, and Albert Giraud; feel the tug on our heart strings by composers Henry Purcell, Claude Debussy and Arnold Schoenberg; and culminate with an embodiment of love by the Commedia dell’ Arte figure of Pierrot, who was touched by the penultimate knowledge of love (or was he just "touched"?).

Along the way, we enjoy poetic expressions of "Amor" through the media of opera, dance, and mime! Throughout this journey, aspects and attributes of Valentine’s Day can be glimpsed as metaphors for the manifestation of the notion of “Romantic Love”, differentiating our specie’s mating activities from those of the animals.
