Session Overview

Are you looking to jazz up your science curriculum? Are you looking for ways to introduce the scientific method and physics in an authentic way? Then plan to join Kerry McLaughlin of the Intrepid as she explores engaging, active and tangible ways to learn about the scientifc method.

In this session, Kerry will share cross-curricular ways that aviation can be brought into the classroom via inquiry based questioning, hands-on experiments and primary sources. This session helps elementary and middle school teachers delve into learning strategies for exploring aviation technology through the progression of aerospace engineering and design, taking off and landing an aircraft, and comparing and constrasting subsonic and supersonic flight.

The Intrepid engages students with active and tangible ways to learn the scientific method, physics and how simple machines work as they highlight American history and technological developments from the last century.

Kerry McLaughlin is the Mangager of Educational Initiatives at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. She has been in the museum field since 1995, creating and teaching programs to students in grades K through 12. Kerry earned her BA in History from York College of Pennsylvania and her MA in Museum Studies from Seton Hall. Kerry enjoys working with students and teachers to open up the world of science, especially aviation.
