Title: From Students to Learners: New Learning Environments for 21st Century Learners
Presenter: Bob Pearlman
Date: 01/19/2011
Session Overview
Join author and educational strategist Bob Pearlman as he delves into New Learning Environments for 21st Century Learners.
Students of the 21st Century, in the US and elsewhere, need a richer school experience that connects them to the real world, real work, and quality relationships with teachers and adult mentors in the workplace and the community. Teaching and learning also need to be totally redesigned to enable students to master 21st Century knowledge and skills. During this webinar Bob will take you on a virtual tour of several of the most innovative new schools in the US and the UK where students become self-directed and self-assessing learners. You will learn about the new learning environments and the new language of school design that characterizes these new and re-designed schools.
While 21st Century Learning flourishes best when whole districts or whole schools establish a new culture of students as learners, Pearlman will also share ideas as to how classroom teachers can transform their own learning environment and practice to support these learners at work.
Bob is currently a strategy consultant for 21st Century school and district development; he served as the director of Strategic Planning for the New Technology Foundation in Napa, CA (a school development organization which supports the replication of the New Technology 21st Century High School model in more than 60 communities across the United states) from 2002-2009. And, he consults and speaks widely in the US and the UK on 21st Century Learning.
Pearlman is a 20 year veteran of the classroom, and has served as Coordinator of Educational Reform Initiatives for the Boston Teachers Union, National Consultant on Educational Technology for the American Federation of Teachers and as a co-founder of the Co-NECT School New American School Design Team as well as the Director of Education and Workforce Development at Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network (2000-2001) and President of the Autodesk Foundation (1996-2000). Pearlman is a pioneer in designing new 21st Century schools, integrating project-based learning, work-based learning, and technology into the schools, and in training teachers, administrators, and parents in the application of new technologies and their role in restructuring schools. In addition, Bob is the author of many articles, including Designing New Learning Environments to Support 21st Century Skills (a chapter in the new book, 21st Century Skills: Rethinking How Students Learn) and many more.
