Lessons Learned

From Student Programs
On gaining new knowledge from the program…

Content Provider: NASA Digital Learning Network (JPL)
Program Title: Planet Hopping: Exploring the Solar System with Mathematics

  • Impact on Learning
“Even after two weeks of studying the solar system, prior to this program, several students thought they would be able to jump the highest on Jupiter. They learned in a pleasant way, that this is not the case.”
  • Increase in Educator Knowledge
“I did not know there was a NASA facility in CA.”
  • I did not think of using inverse Math equations in Science”.
  • Recommend? Yes
“I haven't stopped hearing the word "inverse" since we disconnected”
    - Grade 5 teacher

Content Provider: Milwaukee Public Museum
Program Title: Christmas Tree Ship Series: Story Time

  • Impact on Learning
“Giving a hands-on activity to go along with the reading of the story made it much more memorable to the students.”
“The students were engaged and had an opportunity to go home and retell the story using the Christmas tree ornament. I feel that it helped them recognize the importance of story telling and of this genre.”

  • - Grades 10-12

Content Provider: Alaska SeaLife Center
Program Title: Eat or Be Eaten in Alaska

  • Impact on Learning
“Many of my students who are usually not active in lessons enjoyed this presentation. They wanted to ask questions and answer questions. So many of them wanted to respond, that it was hard to get them to remember they couldn't ALL yell out their answers! It was also great for all of us since we are land locked in Kansas.”
  • Increase in Educator Knowledge
“YES! I have lived in land locked Kansas for 31 years. I have traveled and have been to the ocean, but am not well versed in the ecology of the area. We were all amazed by the jaw structure of the sea lion! I also was not familiar with the diving birds - so fun to watch.”
  • Recommend? Yes
“It was very educational, especially for those not near the ocean. It brings a new respect for wildlife to those that can't go to it.”
  • Comments:
“Besides meeting science standards, the program was wonderful in reviewing geography. I loved how she compared Alaska to Kansas. It was also nice that she made the connection of WHY we should care about the waters near Alaska - even though we live in Kansas. There is NO way that I could bring the depth of knowledge to my students. The personal experiences that she shared about observing the wildlife can not be duplicated by a teacher in the classroom. Getting to watch the animals in the aquariums was also very fascinating. The kids really seemed to connect to the presenter and the wildlife.” - Grade 6
