| Program Description | In Write to Learn: Child Labor, Adora gives a visually engaging lesson on child labor, past and present, and then guides students through a related creative writing exercise. To prepare students for the writing activity, Adora reads brief excerpts of first-hand accounts written by child laborers, outlines the basic precepts of descriptive writing, reviews the concept of ‘show, not tell’, and teaches students how to use writing as a vehicle to travel through time and space. | |
| Program Format |
1. Adora introduces herself and asks students about their own ‘work experiences’. 2. Slideshow and introduction to the history of child labor. 3. Questions and answers. 4. Adora reads first-hand account from a child laborer. 5. Adora reviews basic concepts of descriptive writing. 6. To prep students for activity, Adora reads her own example. 7. Adora asks students to imagine that they are first-hand witnesses to the conditions she has described, and guides them through a descriptive writing activity based on the lesson 8. Students share their writing. |
