Program Description   In Write to Learn: Chinese American History, child author and internationally renowned speaker Adora Svitak gives students a visually dynamic introduction to the history of Chinese immigrants in America, then guides students through a related creative writing exercise. To prepare students for the writing activity, Adora contrasts her own family’s experience was modern immigrants with of brief excerpts of first-hand accounts written by early and Chinese immigrants. She then shares a monologue she wrote based on the lesson, outlines the basic precepts of descriptive writing, and guides students through the process of integrating factional information into a fictional context.
Program Format   1. Adora introduces herself.
2. Slideshow and introduction to the history of Chinese immigration to America, and Chinese contributions to American culture.
3. Questions and answers.
4. Adora reads first hand accounts from early Chinese immigrants.
5. Adora reviews basic concepts of descriptive writing.
6. To prepare students for activity, Adora reads her own example of a personal monologue based on the lesson.
7. Adora asks students to imagine that they are first hand witnesses to the conditions she has described, and guides them through a descriptive writing activity based on the lesson
8. Students share their writing.
