  • 05 min: Introduction and prior knowledge
  • 15 min: Clues from the past–origins, diversity, and adaptations
  • 15 min: Perils of the present–life history, habitats, and ecology
  • 15 min: Challenges for the future–conservation and research
  • 10 min: Questions and answers
Total program length can flexibly run from 35–60 minutes.

Objectives

Identify and Describe Shark Diversity and Adaptations – Students will be able to categorize and describe different types of sharks, including their various adaptations and sensory abilities. They will understand the differences between bony fish and cartilaginous fish anatomy and physiology. Through interactive activities and discussions, students will explore how these adaptations contribute to the sharks' survival in their environments.

Investigate Shark Behavior and Ecological Role –Through observation and inquiry, students will investigate the behaviors of sharks, including their feeding habits and ecological roles within marine ecosystems. By examining the interactions between sharks and their environment, students will understand the vital role sharks play in maintaining a balanced oceanic ecosystem. They will develop the ability to ask informed questions and seek answers about the complex relationships between sharks, rays, and their habitats.

Examine Misconceptions and Conservation Efforts – Students will critically analyze popular misconceptions about sharks and rays that have led to their misunderstanding and endangerment. They will explore the impact of negative perceptions on shark populations and ecosystems. By studying real-life case studies like Dr. Eugenie Clark's pioneering research and today's FinPrint shark survey program, students will gain insights into ongoing efforts to protect and preserve these species.
