African American Studies Community Research Project

I'm hoping to engage my African American Studies students in primary and secondary research about the lives of black and brown people in their community. Research techniques will include recording their own experiences and observations, interviewing community members, conducting surveys, and investigating local, state, and national data trends. Their goal: to determine, as accurately as they can, the state of life for black and brown people in Winchester, Kentucky. We will develop research questions to guide investigations (ex. how does life expectancy of black and brown residents compare to white? ex. how many school disciplinary reports cite racist behavior or speech?).

I'm hoping other classrooms around the nation may engage in similar research so that we may together present a tapestry of life/experience for African Americans today. We could collect, share, and present our findings.
