Module 1: Introduction to Archeology

Students will explore the role of archeology within the National Park Service using specific examples from parks in the Midwest Region and projects by the Midwest Archeological Center (MWAC). Presenters will engage participants in thoughtful conversations about the stewardship of cultural resources by the National Park Service through the discussion of artifacts and archeological excavations.
1. Introduction to the Midwest Archeological Center and the National Park Service.
2. Introduce archeology and discuss
3. Complete "What is an Artifact" activity
4. Discuss the importance of archeology, preservation, and stewardship in the Park system
Participants will:
- learn about the locations of some Midwest national parks.
- understand the basic definition of archeology.
- explore the role of archeologists in the National Park Service.
- engage in the principles of stewardship and cultural resource management.
Stewardship - taking care of and protecting something worth preserving Conservation - helping to prevent waste or loss Heritage - something acquired from a predecessor, or passed down through generations; a birthright Cultural Resources - evidence or place of past human activity such as an archeological site, object, landscape, or building Archeology - the scientific study of past human life and culture using artifacts such as pottery and tools Artifacts - any object made or used by humans in the past National Park Service - agency of the US government that manages the national parks, national monuments, and conserves historic properties for future generations

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.4.SL.1 -- Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.4.SL.3 -- Identify the reasons and evidence a speaker provides to support particular points.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.5.SL.1 -- Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.5.SL.3 -- Summarize the points a speaker makes and explain how each claim is supported by reasons and evidence.
