With over 220 miles of mapped and surveyed passages, this underground wilderness appeals to human curiosity. Its splendor is revealed through fragile formations and glimpses of brilliant color. Its maze of passages lures explorers, and its scientific wealth remains a mystery.

Program Details

Format

1. This program begins with a discussion about the National Park Service and what it does, along with an explanation of a national monument.
2. The exact order of the program may vary with each presenter; however, we will discuss:
- Animals that can be found at the national monument
- Plants that can be found at the national monument
- Adaptations that various species use to survive the changing environment of the Black Hills
3. Time is allowed for questions and answers.
*This program is meant to be interactive and students are encouraged to ask and answer questions.

Objectives

The participant will:
- learn about different adaptations of animals in the Black Hills
- be able to list at least 2 adaptations of plants in the Black Hills
- develop an appreciation for the importance of biodiversity
