With over 220 miles of mapped and surveyed passages, this underground wilderness appeals to human curiosity. Its splendor is revealed through fragile formations and glimpses of brilliant color. Its maze of passages lures explorers, and its scientific wealth remains a mystery.

Program Details

Format

1. This program begins with an introduction to the National Park Service.
2. We then discuss life in a cave, focusing on bats and bat biology.
3. This program ends with a discussion on how humans can help protect bats and other fragile species.

Depending on the students' age and teacher preference, a game about bats may be played.

Objectives

The participant will:
- Understand the role that bats play in the ecosystem
- Discuss how humans have impacted bats and other cave species
