Program Details

Format

We will lead students through four segments: World Heritage, Artifacts, the People and Ancient Knowledge, using demonstrations, videos and interactive questions.

Program Outline
A. Introduction - The facilitator greets students and shares a general introduction to the program.
B. Introduction to World Heritage Sites and the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks - With a series of images, videos and prompt questions, students will learn about the sites and their importance.
C. Exploration of artifacts -Students will be able to see up-close some artifacts from the sites (the facilitator will be using a document-camera that allows objects to be shown and manipulated live). What questions do you have about this object?
D. What we know about the people - During this segment, students will learn what we know about the Native people who built and used these sites. They will also hear and observe a first-person testimony from Chief Glenna J. Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee of Oklahoma, about what the sites mean to her Tribe and their relationship with the sites even after they were forcibly removed from Ohio.
E. Ancient Knowledge - With a series of interesting facts about the construction of these sites, students will learn about the engineering skills and astronomical knowledge these people demonstrated as they created identical and extremely large geometrical earthworks aligning with the cycles of the sun and the moon.
F. Wrap-Up - Final activity, recap of content and Q&A.

Objectives

- Comprehend how archeologists have analyzed artifacts to understand the people who built the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks.
- Make connections between the artifacts’ materials and the movement of people across North America at the time.
- Reflect on the connections between ancient Native American cultures and the American Indian Tribes of the present.
