Program Details

Format

This presentation uses a photo slideshow to guide participants through the history of Las Vegas. Along the way, the presenter asks questions about the images and historical artifacts presented. This presentation relies on primary source analysis and visual thinking and observation skills.

Major topics explored include the settlement of Las Vegas, the railroad, the growth of the Black community during World War II, segregation, the historic Westside community, the Civil Rights Movement, shift to integretation, the experiences of famous Black performers, and race riots in the city's history.

Objectives

1. Participants will understand the role of the Black community in the development of the city of Las Vegas.
2. Participants will be introduced to important figures in the Civil Rights Movement in Las Vegas.
3. Participants will examine the push and pull factors that contributed to migration to Las Vegas.
4. Participants will reflect upon the successes and failures of civil rights actions in Las Vegas history.
