to learn more about the process of ecological succession! Through this Distance
Learning program, students will learn how land can progress through a variety
of ecological conditions in response to disturbance and take a closer look at
how Glacier Bay has changed in the years following the retreat of glaciers.

*For the winter 2025-2026 season only: Education programs will be offered from the end of January until the middle of March. Scheduling will begin after January 12, 2026. Long Distance Classes can be scheduled Monday through Friday, with the earliest time being 9:00 am (EST). Our programs are from Alaska, which is 4 hours behind EST. Program Details

Format

1. The ranger will introduce a brief history of Glacier Bay National Park.
2. Students will learn about how ecosystems progress through distinct successional stages.
3. Students will observe a variety of plants and animals characteristic of different successional stages.

Objectives

1. Describe ecological succession.
2. Identify one species of early, mid, and late successional plant.
3. List three examples of natural or human-caused ecological disturbance.
