Format
1. This program begins with a discussion about the National Park Service "arrowhead" emblem.
2. Participants then watch a short introductory video about Sleeping Bear Dunes.
3. We will then explore what the Sleeping Bear Dunes landscape may have looked like during the Devonian Period, using commonly found fossils
4. We will define a glacier and show evidence that glaciers have moved through this area, including moraines
5. We will define weathering, erosion, and deposition, and show how they create the dunes
6. We will give examples showing how the landscape is still changing at Sleeping Bear Dunes
7. Time is allowed for questions and answers.
Objectives
Students will:
Name the elements of the NPS arrowhead and describe what they represent
• Name at least two pieces of evidence that show how the landscape at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has changed over time
• Understand how glaciers helped to shape the landscape at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
• Define weathering, erosion, and deposition
• Give two examples of weathering and erosion
• State one way they can help protect dune ecosystems
