The Ancient Superpowers: Byzantine Empire vs. Sasanian Empire

This presentation discusses the history of the wars between the
Byzantine and Sasanian Empires of Late Antiquity (2nd - 7th century CE).
The presentation gives a brief background for both the Byzantines and
the Sasanians, and proceeds to give the history of these empires'
military encounters. The audience will learn about the Sasanians'
initial wars with the Romans, and how, after the reign of Constantine
the Great, wars continued with Byzantium. Through this presentation, the
audience will also learn religious history of the Byzantines and
Sasanians, as well as interested facts about their rulers.

The Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center (IAUNRC) at Indiana University's Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies is a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center dedicated to raising awareness about its target area: namely the Turkic, Iranian, Mongolian, Uralic, and Tibetan cultural spheres. Some countries included are Turkey, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan.

Program Details

Format

1. The program begins with brief backgrounds on the Byzantine Empire and Sasanian Empire, individually.
2. The programs proceeds with a history of the wars between the Roman Empire and the Sasanian Empire.
3. The program then discusses the wars and religious tensions between the Byzantine Empire and the Sasanian Empire.
4. The presentation ends with a discussion of the fall of the Sasanian Empire, the coming of the Islamic Caliphates, and how the Byzantine Empire shrunk but lasted until 1453.
5. The program will end with time for questions and discussion.

- learn about the rulers of the Byzantine and Sasanian Empires
- explore the changing religious dynamics in the Byzantine and Sasanian Empires
