Objectives
This program begins with a welcome and mission briefing from Sea Turtle Inc.
Participants are introduced to a real sea turtle patient and review its case file.
They examine clues such as x-rays, field notes, and photos to identify potential causes.
Participants analyze the evidence and determine who or what injured the turtle.
The mystery is revealed, followed by a discussion on human impact and conservation solutions.
Time is allowed for questions, and participants receive their Sea Turtle Investigator certificate.
Standards Alignment
National Standards
This program supports NGSS standards by engaging students in scientific practices such as asking questions, analyzing and interpreting data, constructing explanations, and applying evidence to real-world conservation issues. Students investigate environmental threats to sea turtles using real data, fostering critical thinking and awareness of human impacts on ecosystems. This program supports Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts by engaging students in reading, analyzing, and discussing informational text and visual data. Students cite evidence, develop and communicate conclusions, and apply academic vocabulary in context. Through collaborative investigation and problem-solving, the program builds critical thinking skills and reinforces reading comprehension, speaking and listening, and evidence-based reasoning aligned with CCSS for grades 3–6.
