Creating Music with Technology

by  Bash the Trash Environmental Arts

Program image

This is a flexible multi-session residency that is designed to accommodate a range of ages, curricular needs and resources. Students will be introduced to concepts of producing and composing music with technology, such as sampling live sounds and editing them, looping samples to create patterns and drones, and sequencing notes to create melodies. This work reinforces traditional music subjects such as melody, rhythm, form, structure and song creation, while embracing different approaches to music creation. We will look at the school’s onboard app technology to see what students can use to create new music in the classroom using technology along with traditional and non-traditional instruments.

Bash the Trash Environmental Arts

HASTINGS ON HUDSON, NY
United States

Bash the Trash programs are about music, science, culture, arts and the environment! Centered around the concept of sustainability, we’ve been building and performing with found-object instruments for over 30 years, making connections to plastic pollution and climate change.

Over time our programs have evolved into a wide range of musical and cultural experiences that go beyond homemade instruments. Our diverse crew of presenters offer a series of programs based on their individual artistic skills and cultural backgrounds, making connections with students through their amazing experiences. We’re eager to interact with audiences through the arts, Q&A and conversation to create true cultural and artistic exchanges.

Hands-on instrument-building or art-making is possible in most programs using simple reused/repurposed materials. Bash the Trash offers workshop/performances and multiple-session residencies as well as fun and useful professional development for educators, all closely aligned to national and local standards. Plus Bash the Trash programs are great for special days like Earth Day, National Recycling Day and World Water Day!

Format

This is a flexible residency that can be done in a single session, or over multiple sessions. Of course, longer residencies will result in deeper learning and more hands-on experiences. Much will depend on what onboard music technology the students will have access to. But in general here is what might happen over the course of a one or multiple session residency:

One session - an introduction to music technology, and perhaps a little taste of creating a musical piece
Two sessions - explore school apps; using onboard app instruments
Three sessions - add sampling and looping
Four - add form to start song creation
Five and up - continue to build more complex compositions, and perform

Objectives

This program is designed to introduce students to the concepts, rigor and rewards of creating music with technology. We’ll work with you to create a residency that is appropriate for the student age, previous experience (or none!), number of sessions
