Format
This is a live interactive program. A experienced educator will lead students through an exploration of videos created exclusively for this program and featuring two Native American artists, Holli Margell and Richard Zane Smith. Students will be introduced to and discuss concepts such as heritage, cultural identity and artistic expression. The program also provides information about American Indian Removal since Holli and Richard are descendants of peoples that were once in Ohio, but whose contemporary Tribes reside in Oklahoma due to this poignant part of US History.
Objectives
Students will:
• Recognize the work and artistic processes of two Native American artists, identifying different artistic mediums and cultural influences reflected in their creations.
• Analyze the connections between artistic expression and cultural identity by reflecting on the ways each artist’s background shapes their art and creative journey.
• Understand that Native Americans are still here as active citizens in their community and the US.
