Through his experiences in the military, Dwight Eisenhower knew the advantage of having an extensive highway system. Therefore, as President he passed The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, the largest infrastructure project in U.S. history. Students will analyze primary sources to discover the history of one of President Eisenhower's most iconic programs.

Program Details

Format

1. This program begins with the history of the The Federal-Act Highway Aid of 1956 and the events that influenced President Eisenhower's decision to create the highway system.
2. The presenter will help participants analyze The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 to find relevant information.
3. Discussion about the pros and cons of the highway system will take place.
4. A video showing modern practices of building highways will be viewed.
5. Time will be allowed for questions and answers.

Objectives

- Students will gain an understanding of how and why the Interstate Highway System was created. -Students will use information learned to draw conclusions about the impact of the Interstate Highway System on the economy, environment, and citizens of the United States. - Students will analyze a primary source document to find information about the Interstate Highway System.
