Program Details

Format

1. Intro and overview. The program begins with an introduction of Pacific Marine Mammal Center, a peek at some of our current and former patients, and a quick discussion of how PMMC interacts with wild marine mammals.
2. Definitions. Participants will learn what adaptations are, and some of the different ways that adaptations can help animals to survive.
3. Comparisons. Now that we know what to look for, participants will compare an animal that lives on land with an animal that lives in the sea, and discuss their adaptations for their environments.
4. Ocean Focus. Participants will learn about several marine mammals in a variety of ocean environments, and discover how their bodies are different to survive different marine conditions.
5. Activity and Q & A. Now that we've learned about so many ocean animals, students will craft their own marine mammal out of various body parts. While they complete their activity, the instructor will be available to answer any follow up questions.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

1. Observe a marine mammal and identify 1-2 adaptations that allow it to survive in the ocean, and how those adaptations help it to survive.
2. Compare body parts of different animals and understand whether those animals live in the ocean or on land.
3. Discuss the various paths marine mammal evolution has taken to lead to our current ocean biodiversity.
