Format
1. Students will learn the ABCs of safe sleep.
2. A pulse oximeter will be used to measure students’ blood oxygen levels.
3. Next, students will participate in a safe sleep simulation to show what could happen to a baby’s oxygen levels if placed in a variety of sleep positions.
4. A clock drawing task will simulate damage to the brain that may occur during Shaken Baby Syndrome.
5. Students are encouraged to share their learning with others to keep babies safe.
Objectives
Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:
1. Identify the ABCs of safe sleep as Alone, on their Back, and in a Crib.
2. Name some safe places for a baby to sleep.
3. Define SIDS as the sudden death of a baby younger than 1 year of age that remains unexplained after a thorough investigation.
4. Explain why a baby will not choke if they vomit or spit up while sleeping on their back.
5. Identify at least three ways to soothe a crying baby.
6. Define Shaken Baby Syndrome as a severe form of child abuse causing serious brain injury resulting from forcefully shaking an infant or toddler.
7. Identify at least three ways to prevent burn injuries in children.
