As a world-class, AZA-accredited nonprofit marine research institution, we bring the excitement of authentic research and hands-on learning to you. From chatting with a shark trainer in the stunning new Mote Science Education Aquarium, to exploring the Florida Keys and observing coral reefs like a real scientist, our virtual lessons are designed to engage and inspire your students. Aligned with state and national education standards, our lessons range from 30 to 60 minutes and provide a unique and thrilling way to dive into STEM topics. Join us on a virtual learning journey and unlock the mysteries of the ocean!

Program Details

Format

1. SEA Me Read - Non-Fiction programs begin with a live introduction from a Mote expert who introduces the featured informational text and the scientific concepts or real-life figures it highlights.
2. We read the book together using a dialogic approach, inviting participants to analyze facts, observe details in the illustrations or photos, and engage with the text’s STEM themes.
3. After the reading, we transition to live video or high-resolution imagery to witness the real-world application of the book's topics, from animal anatomy to environmental phenomena.
4. Educators lead interactive discussions and critical thinking activities, such as a "Blizzard Quizzard," that are tailored to the specific age and grade level of the audience to reinforce informational comprehension.
5. Every session concludes with a live Q&A period where participants can ask our experts questions about the book, the scientific process, and how they can contribute to ocean conservation.

Objectives

The participants will:

• Identify key scientific facts and informational details within the text to distinguish between narrative structure and objective observation.
• Analyze the contributions of STEM role models or the mechanics of natural phenomena to improve informational reading comprehension and critical thinking.
• Explore real-world connections between non-fiction literature and live-action media featuring animals, habitats, or scientific discoveries.
• Engage in an interactive dialogue with Mote experts to synthesize new scientific information and satisfy curiosity about the natural world and conservation.
