George Washington was appointed Commander in Chief of the Continental Army in 1775. After leading the Army to victory in the Revolutionary War, he promptly resigned his military commission in December of 1783. In this free program, students will learn about Washington's leadership, the significance of his decision to relinquish power, and how this precedent continues to inform peaceful transitions of power to this day.

George Washington's Mount Vernon is owned and maintained by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union, a private, non-profit organization founded in 1853 by Ann Pamela Cunningham. The Association is the oldest national historic preservation organization in the country. 

The mission of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association is to preserve, restore, and manage the estate of George Washington to the highest standards and to educate visitors and people throughout the world about the life and legacies of George Washington, so that his example of character and leadership will continue to inform and inspire future generations.

Program Details

Format

1. The program will begin with an introduction of the topic, the historical context, and focus on key moments from the life of George Washington.
2. The audience will then analyze several primary sources (art, maps, documents, and other material culture) to explore the life and leadership of George Washington as the first President of the United States.
3. The audience will get to engage with the presentation through the use of interactive elements such as polls, reactions, etc.
4. Time is allowed for questions and answers.

Objectives

Through this program, students will:
1. Gain deeper understanding of George Washington as a multi-faceted leader in revolutionary times
2. Develop historical thinking skills by analyzing primary and secondary sources
3. Explore how GW’s leadership and legacy are relevant to today’s modern world and evolving democracy
4. Gain deeper understanding of inclusive histories that reflect the diversity of the 18th century
5. Be empowered to recognize their own leadership abilities
