Format
1. The program opens with a quick hello from Taipei and an introduction to Teacher Seth's challenge: getting from his hotel to school by 8:00 AM.
2. Students are introduced to the "time and money" game mechanic and learn how to earn resources back through compare-and-contrast observations.
3. The class makes their first decisions (breakfast, video game store detour) and sees the consequences play out on video.
4. Students choose the main route: taxi or MRT subway and bus.
5. We travel the chosen route together through embedded videos, slideshows, and live commentary, pausing for cultural observations, basic Mandarin Chinese phrases, and map checks.
6. Students make compare-and-contrast observations between Taipei and their own community to earn time and money along the way.
7. The program ends with Seth either arriving on time or not, followed by a brief reflection discussion and time for questions and answers.
Objectives
By the end of the program, students will be able to:
Identify and describe the major transportation options available in Taipei, including taxis, the MRT subway system, and the city bus network.
Compare and contrast everyday life in Taipei with everyday life in their own community, using specific observations about infrastructure, language, food, and landmarks.
Make reasoned decisions that balance competing resources (time, money, cultural experience, environmental impact) in a real-world scenario.
Recognize a handful of written and spoken Mandarin Chinese phrases used in everyday transportation settings.
