John Bertles has worked as a teaching artist, professional developer, administrator, curriculum writer and consultant in arts education for over 35 years. By exploring your goals, resources and curricular needs of your school and your community he’ll help you plan a series of workshops and programs that will be educational, engaging and fun for your students, as well as building the long-term skills of your educators.

John Bertles is an educator, composer and instrument-builder. A professional development workshop leader for Kennedy Center from 2006-2025, he has presented for educators in 42 states and abroad. He is the co-founder of Bash the Trash Environmental Arts, an arts education and performing collective presenting over 200 in-person performances annually in schools, festivals and other venues as well as virtual presentations across the US and Canada. Bash the Trash has reached over 2 million students over 35 years. He was nominated for a Grammy Award and a Drama Desk Award in 2018 for the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit "Once on This Island” for the creation and orchestration of a set of on-stage instruments made from beach trash; is a recipient of Bennington College’s Visionary Leadership Award; and a thirteen-time winner of the ASCAP Plus Childrens' Song-writing Award. He has performed with YoYo Ma, Wynton Marsalis and Max Roach, and visited Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (Episode 1752).

If for any reason the recipient wishes to cancel a program, there is no fee up to 24 hours before the program. Cancellation within 24 hours of program, with no rescheduling possible, entails payment of the full fee.

However, in the case of a weather or pandemic-related cancellation within 24 hours of program, please contact us and we'll work it out.

Bash the Trash programs are about music, science, culture, arts and the environment! Centered around the concept of sustainability, we’ve been building and performing with found-object instruments for over 30 years, making connections to plastic pollution and climate change.

Over time our programs have evolved into a wide range of musical and cultural experiences that go beyond homemade instruments. Our diverse crew of presenters offer a series of programs based on their individual artistic skills and cultural backgrounds, making connections with students through their amazing experiences. We’re eager to interact with audiences through the arts, Q&A and conversation to create true cultural and artistic exchanges.

Hands-on instrument-building or art-making is possible in most programs using simple reused/repurposed materials. Bash the Trash offers workshop/performances and multiple-session residencies as well as fun and useful professional development for educators, all closely aligned to national and local standards. Plus Bash the Trash programs are great for special days like Earth Day, National Recycling Day and World Water Day!

Format

This is a flexible consulting session, but here are some possibilities.
- Explore your goals as curriculum for a class, school, district etc.
- Look at your standards to find some hints about how to build a program
- Consider your resources in terms of personnel, educational materials and training budget
- Brainstorm a possible path to adding arts integrated and steam-driven content to your current curriculum
- Rough out a sample introductory program to get you started

Objectives

This is a consulting session for those classes/schools/districts who are looking to add Arts Integration concepts and STEAM concepts to their curriculum. This can be achieved through long-term planning, curriculum development, professional development and other methods; but it all begins with a good long-term overall conceptual plan and clear goals, with assessment built in along the way.
