Spies and Disguise - Washington and the Women of the Revolution

by  George Washington's Mount Vernon

Program image

In this free interactive program, students will learn about the often overlooked role played by women, camp followers, and spies during the American Revolution. Both the British and American forces during the Revolutionary War employed a wide range of spy networks and spy craft to gain critical information about the other side. George Washington quickly recognized the need for effective intelligence gathering efforts and developed a number of spy rings and other secret agents to gather information behind enemy lines. Women like Anna Smith Strong played an important role in these efforts, while others aided the cause of freedom as camp followers, providing essential support to troops by mending clothes, cooking meals, selling goods, and caring for sick and wounded soldiers. Through compelling stories and historical accounts, the program brings to life the experiences of those who supported the Revolution away from the battlefield.
