The Skeleton Inside You: What X-rays Reveal with Author Carla Killough McClafferty

by  Authors on Call, iNK Think Tank

Program image

This program is based on the book, The Head Bone's Connected to the Neck Bone: The Weird, Wacky and Wonderful X-ray by Carla Killough McClafferty.
This fun and factual session is an introduction to scientific concepts. We’ll begin by talking about how X-rays work, and how they are different from photographs taken with a camera. As we look at X-rays of people and animals, we will discuss why some things (like bones) show up, and other things (like skin) don’t. Briefly I will explain how a German scientist discovered X-rays and explain that he named them “X” rays because X stands for the unknown in math. We will discuss various ways X-rays are used to day, as I show X-ray images of mummies, a violin and more. We will end by showing X-rays of various objects and let them guess what they are including grapes, chips, snakes, a parrot, hands and many others.

Program Details

Format

1. This interactive program will begin by discussing what would happen if we had no bones. Then discuss questions like: How do you know we have bones? Have you ever seen them? How can we see them? Were we always able to see inside the body? How can we see inside to our skeletons? Did you know you have more bones than your parents?
2. In an age appropriate way, we will discuss the discovery of X-rays and how they work. Discuss why Dr. Roentgen named the “X” rays.
3. In an age appropriate way, discuss why some things show up on X-rays and others things to do show up.
4. Look at a wide assortment of X-ray images including broken bones, healthy bones, toys, chips, alligators, and snakes and many more.

Objectives

1. To challenge students to think about how scientific discoveries change the world, and affect their own lives.
2. To engage students in science as inquiry as we pose questions and discuss the answers.
3. To show how research in one topic has connections in many other disciplines of study.
