In this interactive connection to our e-Lab, students will document their lab journals using the P.A.W. steps: Predict, Actual, Why? as many experiments are performed and explained by the Lab Director. Many science topics are explored as your team of scientists work collaboratively using science concepts to explain the 'magic'.

Challenger Learning Center at Wheeling University (West Virginia)

Wheeling, WV
United States

In addition to offering award winning, state-of-the-art programs in a $500,000 space simulator, the Challenger Learning Center, thanks to technology, brings its innovative programs to distant classrooms around the world through its electronic distance-learning programs, known as e-Missions. The CLC flies more than 800 e-Missions for schools, many located in traditionally underserved districts, each year. We provide FREE Teacher Training sessions via video conference for any of our distance learning programs.

The Challenger Learning Center® also offers adult and student learners the chance to climb aboard a space station and complete a mission in the role of astronauts, scientists, and engineers with its Corporate Missions. A successful mission requires critical thinking, leadership, cooperation, and problem solving.

Program Details

Format

The program begins with the Lab Director introducing a 'magical' experiment. The students are asked to PREDICT what may happen. The Lab Director then demonstrates the experiment and the students document their Lab Journals describing what actually happened. Dynamic discussions from the teams ensue to determine the "why" for each experiment and Lab Journals are again documented by the teams.

Objectives

The participants will be enthralled with the 'magical' nature of the experiments which will increase their curiosity for science. They will also get a solid basis for using the scientific method helping them to predict, describe actual events (noting physical and possible chemical changes) and explain what happened using science concepts.
