Start Up Nation: The Chosen People in the Chosen Land

by  ISRAED-(Formerly JETS-Jerusalem EdTech)

Program image

Students trace the odyssey between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel, through periods of vibrancy, destruction, exile, and rebirth. In recent times, the relationship has spawned a boom in technology that has earned Israel the nickname "Start-Up Nation".

Course Description:

In his 19th century description of the Land of Israel, Mark Twain described it as “a desolate country whose soil is rich enough, but is given over wholly to weeds." This was a far cry from the Biblical description of Israel as a "land flowing with milk and honey."

This course traces the odyssey of the Jewish people and the Land of Israel. It begins with a look at the Biblical concept of "chosenness" as a status not of superiority, but of responsibility - a responsibility placed upon the Jewish people that found expression in laws that were designed to create a unique, just society in the chosen land, the Land of Israel. The dynamic relationship between the Jewish people and their land led to periods of vibrancy during the First and Second Temple Periods, as well as to periods of destruction and exile. The ancient history serves as a backdrop for examining the vibrant rebirth of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel in the last century. Students look at how the Zionist movement in the 19th and 20th centuries renewed the connection between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel, both ravaged by centuries of neglect and repression, resulting in the regeneration of the people, the land, its art and culture, and the Biblical ideal of the just society.

Suggested Audience: The course can be modified for upper elementary, middle school, high school, and adult learners.
