What is “American Art”? Join us as we explore the highlights of our collections and celebrate Maryland’s rich contributions to American cultural arts! Marylanders, both famous and unknown, have played an integral part in defining the essence of American art. From the renowned works of Charles Wilson Peale to the iconic sound of Eubie Blake, visitors will travel back in time as we glimpse the United States through the artist’s eye.

Program Details

Format

1. This program begins with a conversation about what is art.
2. Together we discover the artistic contributions of Marylanders, including Charles Wilson Peale.
3. Examine the history behind our National Anthem.
4. Discuss what is folk art and explore our world renowned quilt collection.
5. Have a final discussion and reflection period about the diversity of art that makes up American Art.

Objectives

The participant will:
1) Explore the diverse types of artistic expression that make up American Art.
2) Develop an appreciation for the arts
3) Engage in a discussion about what is American art and the important role of Folk Art in American history.
