December Holidays! Las Posadas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas!

Your students will love learning and retelling stories about these winter holidays that are celebrated around the world: Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Las Posadas,
and Christmas. Discover that all these celebrations have a special
story, number, food, and candle! We use art and creative writing
methods of paper-cutting, drawing and sign language to tell these stories. Interactive and fun! Please note: We will adjust this program to meet your learning goals.

We will mail you loads of fun supplies that your students will use during our program for each of the four holidays!

     Valerie is the author of 13 storytelling books, a writing teacher, and storyteller. Her books include Paper Cutting Stories A to Z, A Treasury of Trickster Tales, Mystery-Fold: Stories to Tell, Draw, and Fold, and Story Puzzles: Tales in the Tangram Tradition. Other books include Paper Cutting Stories for Holidays, Puppet Tales, and True Tales of Heroes & Heroines.
     Valerie uses unique ways to tell tales for all ages including "Paper-Cutting" (fold and cut), "Mystery-Fold" (draw and tell), "Story Puzzles" (creating tangram objects), and Sign Language. She offers a wide variety of programs for students of all ages, as well as professional development workshops for teachers. Her writing methods are easy, involve audience participation, and engage students! No matter which program you request, Valerie tailors her program to your students! Easy and fun!
      Miss Liz the Science Wiz joins Valerie for our Action Science programs. Miss Liz uses puppets, sign language and action to anchor basic scientific facts presented in our programs. Miss Liz will have your students acting out all kinds of physical and life science concepts!

Program Details

Format

1. We discover that all of these holiday celebrations involve unique symbols, candles, number of days celebrated, stories and foods.
2. We start with Christmas and then explore Kwanzaa and Hanukkah.
3. We will play a game of dreidel using the top and gold coins that I will mail you!
4. Your students will use sign language to tell the Las Posadas story.
5. Together, we retell and draw a star to go with this story.
6. We sing and sign "We Wish You a Happy Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Las Posadas!"
7. We play an identification game to review the stories, foods, numbers, and symbols for all four holidays!

Please note: We can modify this program to focus on a particular holiday(s) and to compare or contrast to others.

Objectives

Your students will:
- listen to and enjoy December celebration stories of Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Las Posadas, Christmas
- understand and honor the differences and similarities in these four holidays
- be able to name a food, symbol, number, and story that is traditional to each holiday
- understand that all these holidays have stories as part of their traditions
- be able to draw the star for the story of Las Posadas
- be able to retell the Las Posadas story
- engage in playing the Dreidel game
- sing the well known song "We wish you a Happy ____" using the sign for each holiday
