Big Trip: a music & movement program about journeys

Lloyd H. Miller, founder of the acclaimed educational rock band the Deedle Deedle Dees, performs a sing-a-long concert featuring his original songs inspired by journeys. Students will walk, march, run, dance, wiggle, fly, flap, paddle, swim, drive, and blast off as we take imaginary voyages via song to places far away (the other side of the country! the other side of an ocean! around the world! space!) and near (our backyard! our neighborhood! our school!) Songs based on true stories of explorers, scientists, adventurers, and daring athletes will come to life for students as participate in seated and standing movement, role plays, call-and-response singing, dance-alongs, and rhythm activities.

Program Details

Format

1. Lloyd will start off with a simple sing-a-long to get the group's attention and have everyone singing together. Perhaps his original song, "I'm Gonna Light Up the World," (a tune about sharing light with people around you) or a classic like "You Are My Sunshine."
2. Lloyd will lead the group in a rhythmic sing-a-long to get everyone moving their bodies -- and aware of their movements. A classic like "If You're Happy and You Know It" or his original "Play Your Hand" (another song where kids find their body parts and use them rhythmically)
3. Lloyd will take the students on a variety of "trips" (for example, to the Farmer's Market, to the park, across the ocean with explorer Henry Hudson, around the world on an adventure with Nellie Bly, up in an airplane with Amelia Earhart, up into space with astronauts Mae Jemison, Sally Ride, and others). Each "trip" is a song that's easy to sing and may also incorporate physical movements.
4. Using visual aids, including a simple world map, puppets, and drawings, Lloyd will give students an idea of "where' we're going
5. Before our final song, Lloyd will give students homework: simple instructions for how to write their own songs about journeys. Lloyd will take a few suggestions and questions from the audience to build an example for this exercise

Objectives

The participant will:
- explore the different types of journeys one can take -- both real and imaginary
- participate in musical "trips" to a variety of places both near and far and identify important details on each of these adventures
- identify different places one can go and some of their essential attributes: the farmer's market, the park, a lake, an ocean, the sky, space
- engage in a discussion about the different ways one can get places: walking, running, marching, jumping, swimming, taking a boat, taking a plane, taking a spaceship
- list the attributes and advantages of different forms of transportation
- participate in seated and standing movement
- engage in rhythmic accompaniment activities that build mental and physical coordination
- explore a map in a basic way as we take imaginary journeys to different countries and across bodies of water
