Lloyd H. Miller, founder of the acclaimed educational rock band the Deedle Deedle Dees, leads an interactive sing-a-long with some help from his musical "family." Students will meet an acoustic guitar, an upright bass, a ukulele, a harmonica, a kazoo, a djembe (a West African hand drum), and other instruments as they join Lloyd on lively original and classic songs. They'll also participate in seated and standing movement, call-and-response singing, chorus sing-a-long, and rhythmic accompaniment.

Program Details


1. Lloyd will start off with a simple interactive gathering song like his original "I'm Gonna Light Up the World," a song about sharing your light with those around you, "You Are My Sunshine" or some else that will get everyone's attention.

2. Lloyd will sing a selection of his lively original songs (for example, "I'm a Duck!" "Little Red Airplane," "Farmer's Market," "Play Your Hand," "Nellie Bly") plus some sing-a-long classics ("I've Been Working on the Railroad," "Old McDonald," "This Little Light of Mine") accompanied by a wide variety of instruments including possibly acoustic guitar, upright bass, electric guitar, electric bass, ukulele, harmonica, kazoo, banjo, piano, djembe, and glockenspiel.

3. Lloyd will show students briefly how each instrument is constructed, hold it up for them to see, and show it makes its sound.

4. Before a final song, there will be a brief question and answer period.

- explore a variety of instruments used in folk, rock, and country music
- listen and compare a diverse selection of instruments
- listen to and mimic musical pitches and rhythms
- cooperate with classmates to sync up claps, stomps, and sing-a-long parts
- develop an appreciation for music from a variety of genres and cultural backgrounds
