Format
1. Using current statistics about the occurrence of suicide and discussion of the myths about suicide, students learn basic facts
2. Students discuss warning signs of suicidal intent including verbal, behavioral, and situational clues.
3. Using videos to help students understand how to ask if a person is considering suicide, support their at-risk friend, and get an adult involved is the final activity.
4. Classroom teachers may print off the pledge for students to sign and hang in their classroom; if they would like. The Pledge has the suicide prevention lifeline number on it.
Objectives
Upon completion of this program the student will be able to:
1. Identify basic facts about suicide.
2. Recognize direct and indirect verbal warning signs.
3. Identify three behavioral and/or situational warning signs.
4. Name three basic suicide intervention steps.
5. Discuss strategies for successful peer intervention.
6. Demonstrate the willingness to help themselves or a troubled friend by signing a help-seeking pledge.
7. Explain importance of asking about suicidal intent.
8. Identify three adults who would be able to help a friend at risk.
9. Identify the Suicide Prevention Lifeline number 1-800-273-TALK (8255) as a resource.
