Turkey Action Science: Cut Out A Turkey Story! Then Your Turkey Can Do Push/Pull/Gravity/Incline!

from Author Valerie Marsh

Program image

A little bit of art, literature and a whole lot of science! First, children enjoy a short fiction story about a turkey who looses his feathers. Then students use their art skills to give their turkey back his feathers as they retell the story. Next up is physics! Miss Liz Science Wiz, and her science puppets will involve your students in a variety of experiments. Using their turkey, students will explore the math and science concepts of line of symmetry, push/pull, gravity and incline. This is a
Hands-On program.
Students will need a paper clip, a piece of paper with the turkey pattern on it and a pair of scissors. For young children, pre-folding or even pre-cutting the pattern might be very helpful. We will mail you the string!

Program Details

Format

1. Author Valerie Marsh begins this program with a quick review of the difference between fiction and non-fiction! Students vote on which they like better. Then Valerie tells a funny story about a turkey who looses his feathers!
2. After that, children will discuss the math concepts of line of symmetry and the amount of feathers. They will draw additional feathers on their turkey.
3. Puppets "Peepers and Dr. Einstein" along with Miss Liz Science Wiz, introduce "Newton's First Law of Motion".
4. Students will make predictions regarding what will happen to their turkey as they apply force. Students will vary the amount of force that they use.
5. Students will experiment with push and pull forces as they glide the turkey across their table.
6. Students will observe gravity as they drop their turkey while sitting down and then standing up!
7. Students will use their string to create an incline for their turkey. They will vary the angle of the incline and observe how this changes the movement of the turkey.
8 Students will increase the speed of their turkey by increasing the weight of the turkey using a paper clip!
9. .We will review all of the science terms: Lab, Question, Predict, Observe, Conclude, Materials

Students will need a paperclip, pencil, scissors, piece of paper with photocopied turkey pattern on it. We will mail you the string! Depending on your students, pre-folding and/or cutting the turkey out for your students might be very helpful.

Objectives

Students will:
1. be able to retell our funny story about a turkey and his feathers.
2. be introduced to the scientific method..
3. understand the terms question, predict, 0bserve,, conclude, materials..
4. learn about the forces of push versus pull.
5. learn about the concept of gravity.
6. learn about the concept of an Incline.
7. be able to identify the line of symmetry.
8 . work cooperatively with a partner during the experiments.
9. be active participants while conducting an experiment.
10. develop an appreciation for physical science.
11. be able to demonstrate push/pull with their turkey.
12. be able to demonstrate gravity with their turkey.
