by  Butterfly Pavilion

Program image

Bone(less) appetit! Students discover just how common
bug-eating really is - both because we eat bugs all the time without knowing
it, and because people all over the world eat bugs as important parts of their

Butterfly Pavilion

At Butterfly Pavilion, we transform the way people think about invertebrates. These small but mighty animals that surround us are so much more than people think. They are everywhere, because everything depends on them. They are the hidden heroes of the animal kingdom, and we--you and us--stand on the backs of these tiny giants.

Butterfly Pavilion is the first stand-alone, Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited non-profit invertebrate zoo in the world and a leader in invertebrate knowledge, inspiration and connection. Our virtual programs feature interactive, real-time lessons on-screen facilitated by a Butterfly Pavilion educator, live on-screen animal experiences and/or exploration of real-world conservation topics and curriculum-aligned content that uses visual and audio media to illustrate science concepts.

Program Details

Format

Through a combination of engaging images, live animals, and physical props, students will be introduced to the concept of bug eating - both unintentionally, as allowable "contaminants" in packaged foods, and intentionally, as a core part of the diet in cultures all over the world.

Students will be able to chime in with what they know and pose questions to the presenter through both polling questions and live chat.

Objectives

Goal(s):
1. Students will understand that it's not dangerous to eat invertebrates that are properly prepared (or the ones that accidentally end up in our food).
2. Students will discover the value of invertebrates as a food source from an environmental, cultural, and nutritional perspective.

Objectives:
(I THINK) I can identify various kinds of edible invertebrates and the reasons people would eat them.
(I FEEL) I can appreciate the value of invertebrates as a food source for people all over the world.
(I DO) I can try eating a "bug."
