Las Posadas, an Hispanic Christmas Tradition with Sign Language and Stories!

      Your students will love learning and retelling the stories of Las Posadas, the important Mexican holiday
that is celebrated in the United States,
Mexico, Latin American, Cuba,
and other Hispanic countries!  What makes this holiday so special? Discover the stories, foods, parades, fireworks, pinatas, and traditions! Find out who gives children their presents and where! We retell the story of Mary and Joseph's search for la posada (lodging) using
both sign language and drawing. Your students will be able to draw and retell this story to someone at home. Fun and easy!
     Please note: This program can be modified to compare/contrast this  holiday and to other holidays in December.

     Students need several sheets of paper, a copy of the star pattern and a pencil please.

Her books include "Paper Cutting Stories A to Z," "A Treasury of Trickster Tales," "Mystery-Fold: Stories to Tell Draw, and Fold," and "Story Puzzles: Tales in the Tangram Tradition." Other books include puppets made from food, and Heroes & Heroines.
     Valerie uses unique ways to tell tales for all ages including"Paper-Cutting" (fold and cut), "Mystery-Fold" (draw and fold), "Story Puzzles" (creating tangram figures), and Sign Language,  She offers Workshops for students, and professional development for teachers. Her story methods are easy, involve audience participation and get kids excited about writing! No matter which program you request, Valerie tailors her program to your class! Easy and fun!
      Miss Liz Science Wiz  joins Valerie for the Action Science programs. Miss Liz uses puppets and physical actions to anchor basic scientific concepts presented in our video conference programs. Miss Liz will have your students acting out all kinds of physical and life science facts!

Program Details

Format

1. We discuss this holiday celebration's unique symbols, candles, number of days celebrated, stories and foods.
2. Your students will use sign language to tell the Las Posadas story.
3. Together, we retell and draw a star to go with this story.
4. We sing and sign "We Wish You a Happy Las Posadas!"
5. We play an identification game to review the candles, stories, foods, numbers, and symbols for Las Posadas.

Students need several sheets of paper, a photocopy of the star, and a pencil.
Please note: This program can be modified to compare or contrast this holiday to others.

Objectives

Your students will:
- listen to and enjoy December celebration stories of Las Posadas
- understand the differences and similarities in this holiday and another (if desired)
- be able to name a food, symbol, and story, traditions
- be able to draw the star for the story of Las Posadas
- be able to retell the Las Posadas story while drawing the star
- sing our sign language song for this holiday.
