Shayba is a brass jewelry artist and an entrepreneur who has created a business, Mahnal, to sell her work. Shabya feels that with the growth of social media and e-commerce, that entrepreneurship is experiencing a renaissance. Shayba studied design at the Institute of Art in Chicago and worked as an accessory specialist for three years. Your students will gain an insight into art and business in this program.

Format

Introduction:

This will be a short introduction by Shayba Muhammad. She'll talk about her background and business. She'll tell the students about her goal for the session, along with sharing some of her personal experiences and lessons learned as a creative entrepreneur.

Heart of the program:

Ms. Muhammad will open by exploring creative expression while conversing with the class. She will cover challenges and benefits as well as the various areas of interest brought up during the conversation. The session will be supplemented with screen shared pictures and examples.

Next, we will dive into clarifying objectives and exit strategies or long term goals of entrepreneurship. This includes anticipating potential challenges with scaling. We will also look at the differences between value based and cost based pricing and how that ties into sustainability as well as marketing. This portion will also be supplemented screen examples and exercises.

Ms. Muhammad will share a few of her personal experiences in learning the importance of doing your best work, responsibility, and organization. Students will receive a list of resources to help them delve deeper into organizing their business and important structural items to start thinking about ahead of time.

Conclusion:
Ms. Muhammad will reemphasize important elements covered and take final questions. She will give them with her contact information for any future questions.

Participants will:

1. develop an understanding of how to balance creative expression with customer considerations. This covers product design and creation, copy and written communication, as well as presentation and experience.

2. learn to create a sustainable career thinking about areas such as how to scale with handmade products and developing an understanding of value based versus cost based pricing.

3. walk away with techniques for prioritizing quality work and organization in areas including product creation, bookkeeping and finances, as well as preparing for dates and deadlines.
