Social & Emotional Superheroes: Zones

by  Banyan Global Learning

Program image

SEL Superheroes was conceived at the beginning of the pandemic to address the uniquely challenging emotional struggles our students currently face. Originally called "Shelter-in-Place Superheroes," a small group of talented performers and teachers introduce the basics of social and emotional learning in a way that is accessible, entertaining, and non-threatening. Even students who typically shy away from participation will be drawn into these authentic conversations and very practical insights.

The program is extremely flexible and can be adapted to any grade level and taught as a series or a one-off (the first episode standing alone but also easily built upon). Topics include empathy, understanding one's own feelings, optimism and growth mindset, and responsible behavior.

You and your students will love this program, and we will love delivering it to you.

Format

K-5 format is a variety show that utilizes the Zones of Regulation as a framework for identifying one's own feelings, practicing empathy, making good choices, and developing optimism. The variety show format keeps it snappy with several teachers using their personal passions to illustrate how they "get back to the green zone" to make good choices.

Middle & High School format focuses on the emotional impact of music and performance as an access point. Students choose music that represents the emotional state of their friends by practicing empathy, themselves by using the Zones of Regulation, and their future self by practicing a growth mindset. Diverse artists and performers model the skills and break down the elements that help music resonates so deeply. Follow up activities ask that students share their musical choices with the people to whom they are connected, allowing them to practice these skills and connect beyond the classroom.

Objectives

Participants will identify the Zones of Regulation as a vehicle to identifying one's own feelings and the feelings of others.
Participants will recognize good choices and the development of a growth mindset and reachable goals as essential components of optimism.
Participants will extend their learning into their real lives by connecting with their families and communities.
