by  Long Island Science Center

Program image

Students have the opportunity to brainstorm to design, build, and test their own creation in our engineering lab programs.  Imagination and experimentation come alive. Choose your engineering theme and all of the necessary materials will be mailed to you. All classes can be conducted in both English and Spanish.

Available themes:

JUNIOR ENGINEERS K-2

Simple Shapes and Structures - Explore the strength of different structures through construction of different models.

Simple Machines: Engineering  in Action - Using age appropriate materials, students will build various simple machines.

ENGINEERS LAB: 3-5 and Middle School

Action Contraptions - Make an easy task very complicated by building a Rube Goldberg machine.

Catapults - The power of the lever comes to life when participants build a fully operational catapult and, of course, test it out.

Bridge Building - Design, construct, and test your very own bridge.

Balloon Powered Vehicles - Using the concept of Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion, participants design, hypothesize, build and test their vehicle.

Hover Crafts - The future is here! Engineer a vehicle that floats on air.

Aerospace Engineering - Learn how airplanes fly and apply concepts of gravity, lift, and air pressure to build and fly your own airplane.

Simple Machines: Levers, pulleys ,and simple machines come to life when students build them.

5. If time allows, we take questions

Objectives

Students will:
- explore the engineering design process
- participate in an engineer design experience by constructing one of the items chosen from the theme list
- test their project out to see if they have achieved the desired result and discuss those results
- modify their designs to see how changes affect the final project
