Fall Prevention

Do you feel unsteady when standing or walking?  Do you worry about falling?  In this program, you will discover the risk factors that can contribute to falls by completing a Falls Self-Assessment.  You will learn about physical as well as environmental factors that can increase the risk of falling. Once you are aware of the risk factors that contribute to falls, you will master specific strategies that can be used to prevent falls.   Did you know that yoga can improve balance and flexibility?  You will participate in some basic chair yoga moves that may improve your range of motion and prevent future falls.   You will also brainstorm strategies to help yourself if you should fall.

Schedule 5 of the same program on the same day and one will be free! Please include a purchase order number when you submit a reservation. Bridging fees will be paid by the customer. An invoice will be sent after successful delivery of each program. A 1.5% late charge will be added 30 days after the invoice date. Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours prior to your confirmed videoconference date to avoid billing. Payment is due in full upon receipt of the invoice. Checks should be made to McMillen Health in US Dollars. Non-payment will result in the denial of further registration from your organization.

Program Details

Format

1. This program begins with a Fall Risk Self -Assessment.
2. We then discuss the differences between physical risk factors and environmental risk factors.
3. Participants learn about the four fall prevention factors.
4. We participate in some chair yoga exercises.
5. Students will discover how to use mobility aids safely.
6. Exercises to improve dexterity in the hands will be conducted.
7. We will then practice techniques to fall safely.
8. Finally, students will brainstorm ideas to help themselves if they experience a fall when alone.

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:

1. Students will self-assess their risk for falling.
2. Students will identify physical and environmental risk factors for falls.
3. Students will list at least three things to help fall-proof a living space.
4. Students will name four key factors to prevent falls.
5. Students will describe two exercises or kinds of exercise to improve balance.
6. Students will list two ways to use a cane/walker safely.
7. Students will describe two ways to prevent wheelchair falls.
8. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to fall safely.
9. Students will name two ways to help themselves if they suffer a fall.
