Magnificent Marine Mammals (1st - 2nd)

Seals, sea lions, sea otters and whales are all mammals, just like you and me! In this program, learners will investigate what makes these mammals so well suited to spend their life in the ocean. As we dive into the world of marine mammals, learners will use images, videos and bio-facts to make observations, compare and contrast, and explore the unique adaptations that these mammals use in their aquatic habitat.

Program Availability from June 21 - July 30 is Mondays and Fridays 8-9am and 10-12:30pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays 8-12:30pm, and Wednesdays 8-9am and 11-12:30pm. Program Details

Format

Learners will explore the world of marine mammals, exploring the different adaptations that make these animals suits for life in the sea.
1. Name characteristic of marine mammals.
2. Identify common adaptations for marine mammals.
3. Explore the two types of whales.
4. Compare and contrast characteristics of seals and sea lions.
5. Explore adaptations and the importance of sea otters.
6. Jaw and teeth comparison.

Objectives

Learners will:
- explore the five characteristics that define a mammal
- compare and contrast characteristics of marine mammals and terrestrial mammals
- identify two adaptations unique to marine mammals
- make observation of marine mammals of the Eastern Pacific and understand the different adaptations they use for survival
