In Geology of Joshua Tree: Rocks and Minerals, a ranger leads an exploration of rocks and minerals of Joshua Tree National Park. Students will complete a journal page along with a ranger as they take a close look at the composition of their local rocks. This program can be modified for various grades and ages. 


Necessary Supplies:  
-1 piece of paper, (blank computer or any notebook paper will work)
-2 rocks found around their house (inside or outside)
-pencil or pen

Program Details

Format

* Students should have all materials prepared prior to program start
1. This program begins with an introduction to Joshua Tree National Park- location, characteristics, etc
2. We then discuss types of scientists leading up to geologists
3. The ranger will show different types of rocks found in the park and discuss characteristics
4. As a group, we will work on a rock-drawing activity with students' own rocks
5. Time is allowed for questions and answers

Objectives

The participants will:
-engage in discussion with peers and park ranger while making observations of rocks found in Joshua Tree National Park
-learn about the science of geology
-practice using observation skills and modeling to draw a detailed version of their own rocks
