Two distinct desert ecosystems, the Mojave and the Colorado, come together in Joshua Tree National Park. A fascinating variety of plants and animals make their homes in a land sculpted by strong winds and occasional rainstorms. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California. 

Program Details

Format

* Students should have all materials prepared prior to program start
1. This program begins with an introduction to Joshua Tree National Park- location, characteristics, etc
2. We then discuss types of scientists leading up to geologists
3. The ranger will show different types of rocks found in the park and discuss characteristics
4. As a group, we will work on a rock-drawing activity with students' own rocks
5. Time is allowed for questions and answers

Objectives

The participants will:
-engage in discussion with peers and park ranger while making observations of rocks found in Joshua Tree National Park
-learn about the science of geology
-practice using observation skills and modeling to draw a detailed version of their own rocks
