Free: Draw Joshua Tree

In this program, a ranger leads a drawing activity of the Mojave Desert while focusing on plant and animal adaptations. This is a great follow-up to Plants and Animals of Joshua Tree. Prior to the program, students will need to gather common materials in preparation for the program. 


Necessary Materials:
-sharpened colored pencils or crayons: green, brown, yellow, blue, orange, black
-1 clean piece of 8.5x11" white paper (any paper will work as long as one side is clean)

Program Details

Format

* Students should have all materials prepared prior to program start
1. Students will follow the guided instructions of the ranger, who will be completing all aspects of the drawing while using a document camera so students can see each step
2. Students will listen and see each step to draw different plants and animals while understanding the adaptations that explain different characteristics of those plants and animals
4. After creating their Mojave desert masterpieces, students will have the opportunity to show their work to the ranger and classmates through their camera
5. Time is allowed for questions and answers.

Objectives

The participants will:
-learn several different plant and animals names and their desert adaptations in Joshua Tree National Park
-follow directions to draw recognizable features
-create their own Mojave desert landscape
