BC Indigenous History

by  Royal BC Museum (Canada)

Program image

British Columbia encompasses the largest diversity of First Peoples cultures and languages than any other province and/or territory in Canada.

The history experienced by British Columbia’s First Peoples, before and after contact with Europeans, is quite unique to the standard history relayed in textbooks and classrooms. Since time immemorial, First Peoples practiced their cultural traditions, governance and ceremonies unhindered. Extensive trade routes existed thousands of years, prior to contact and settlement. First Peoples were connected to their lands and surrounding environments.

When explorers, fur traders and settlers arrived, the time honoured, traditional lives of First Peoples would be profoundly affected and transformed.

Join Leslie McGarry from the Kwakwaka’wakw – Kwagiulth First Nation at the Royal BC Museum and explore the pre- and post-contact histories represented in the First Peoples gallery.
