by  Bash the Trash Environmental Arts

Program image

This show takes students on a virtual journey through Latin America: From the pampas of Argentina, up through the coast of Peru, to the Venezuelan llanos, and ending in the festive city of Rio De Janeiro. Our three amazing live performers - all professional musicians originally from South America - will help students discover the different instruments, rhythms, melodies and languages that make this region of the world so unique. Most importantly, we’ll show how music is a true celebration of our beautiful cultural diversity!

Bash the Trash Environmental Arts

HASTINGS ON HUDSON, NY
United States

Bash the Trash programs are about music, science, culture, arts and the environment! Centered around the concept of sustainability, we’ve been building and performing with found-object instruments for over 30 years, making connections to plastic pollution and climate change.

Over time our programs have evolved into a wide range of musical and cultural experiences that go beyond homemade instruments. Our diverse crew of presenters offer a series of programs based on their individual artistic skills and cultural backgrounds, making connections with students through their amazing experiences. We’re eager to interact with audiences through the arts, Q&A and conversation to create true cultural and artistic exchanges.

Hands-on instrument-building or art-making is possible in most programs using simple reused/repurposed materials. Bash the Trash offers workshop/performances and multiple-session residencies as well as fun and useful professional development for educators, all closely aligned to national and local standards. Plus Bash the Trash programs are great for special days like Earth Day, National Recycling Day and World Water Day!

Program Details

Format

1 - Welcome and introductions; discuss Q&A
2 - First performer introduces the concept of the show, and we are on the way to our first South American country (the exact countries will depend on which of our performers are available). We learn a bit about the culture and music of that country, and the cross-cultural connections of that music; then sing along to a characteristic folkloric song.
3 - Our journey continues to the next South American country, where we explore some the geographic and cultural regions and learn how to build a simple instrument, and then dance and sing along to a famous song.
4 - We continue to a third country where we explore the connections between European, African and South American instruments, and consider why that connection exists.
5 - Finally we end up in the festive city of Rio De Janeiro, where everyone learns how to sing and dance a samba!

Objectives

In this program students will:
- Discover the rich variety of music and cultures in South America, not only from country to country, but even within each country
- Explore how history has shaped the music of South America, including the effects of slavery and colonization
- Look carefully at how resource availability has shaped, changed and dictated how musical instruments are built in different countries and different geographical regions
- Get to know some new music from a place that you may not know
- Consider how music is a universal language that can help bring about a better understanding between cultures, and create amazing new forms of music and art
