Note: There are two versions of this program - one in which the students build their own simple instruments during the program, and one in which there is no instrument-building. This is to accommodate teachers who prefer not to have students collect materials, etc.
1. Introductions, set up Q&A
2. Intro to energy and sound - molecules, vibrations, compression waves, friction
[optional instrument build 1]
3. Intro to sound and information - sound waves, frequency, pitch
[optional instrument build 2]
4. Instrument families or Q&A depending on time
5. Fun close-out (depends on whether they built instruments or not)
Objectives
This is a virtual workshop designed to complement the 1st and 4th Grade NexGen Science Learning Standards in Sound and Energy.
Students will:
- learn about sound energy - what it is, how it is created, how it travels
- learn about how sound can transfer information - sound waves and frequency which affects pitch
- learn about the instrument families and why they make such different sounds
If there is an instrument-building component, students will also discover about reusing materials and sustainability.
