The Science of Sound - A Hands-on Exploration for Classrooms

This is a virtual workshop designed to complement the 1st and 4th Grade NexGen Science Learning Standards in Sound and Energy. In this fun and engaging 45” workshop a solo teaching artist takes students on a journey of discovery about sound. Hands-on in-class instrument-building (using the simplest of recyclable materials) is included for maximum engagement; and video demonstrations reinforce what students are hearing - and feeling - from their instruments. The program culminates in either the “Thing Jam” in which students play their instruments along with BTT performers, or a lively Q&A session.

Bash the Trash programs are about music, science, culture, arts and the environment! Centered around the concept of sustainability, we’ve been building and performing with found-object instruments for over 30 years, making connections to plastic pollution and climate change. 


Over time our programs have evolved into a wide range of musical and cultural experiences that go beyond homemade instruments. Hands-on instrument-building or art-making is possible in most programs using simple reused/repurposed materials. Bash the Trash offers workshop/performances and multiple-session residencies as well as fun and useful professional development for educators, all closely aligned to national and local standards. Plus Bash the Trash programs are great for special days like Earth Day, National Recycling Day and World Water Day!

Program Details

Format

Note: There are two versions of this program - one in which the students build their own simple instruments during the program, and one in which there is no instrument-building. This is to accommodate teachers who prefer not to have students collect materials, etc.

1. Introductions, set up Q&A
2. Intro to energy and sound - molecules, vibrations, compression waves, friction
[optional instrument build 1]
3. Intro to sound and information - sound waves, frequency, pitch
[optional instrument build 2]
4. Instrument families or Q&A depending on time
5. Fun close-out (depends on whether they built instruments or not)

Objectives

This is a virtual workshop designed to complement the 1st and 4th Grade NexGen Science Learning Standards in Sound and Energy.
Students will:
- learn about sound energy - what it is, how it is created, how it travels
- learn about how sound can transfer information - sound waves and frequency which affects pitch
- learn about the instrument families and why they make such different sounds

If there is an instrument-building component, students will also discover about reusing materials and sustainability.
