Many people and cultures have made Nebraska their home. History Nebraska (formerly the Nebraska State Historical Society) has been working since 1878 to collect, preserve, and open to all the state's rich history. At the Nebraska History Museum, and all History Nebraska Sites, we have thousands of objects that help tell the story of Nebraska's past. Through our virtual programming, we hope to make Nebraska's History accessible to all.

Program Details

Format

Welcome (virtually) to the Nebraska History Museum! Students will connect via Google Meet, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams with a History Nebraska Educator inside the museum. Together we will discover more about North America’s largest land mammal: the bison. We will explore bison's cultural, commercial, and ecological value to Nebraska through history.

Lesson Details:
- Lesson Timing: 30 min
- Prep Timing (Optional): 10-30 minutes
- Post Lesson Activity Timing (Optional): 20-30 min

Objectives

- Students will learn about the physical features of bison, the historic uses of bison by indigenous Nebraskans, and their use as a commodity by Euro-Americans in the 19th century.
- Students will be able to define, compare, and contrast the terms resource and commodity.
- Students will be able to identify Bison and compare and contrast Bison and Buffalo
- Students will analyze the use of Bison as a resource and a commodity
- Students will explore ways Americans/ Nebraskans bring Bison populations back to the plains and propose ways they can help.
