George W. Norris: The Life of a Public Servant [FREE]

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a public servant? Or what life was like for Nebraskans in the past? By exploring the historic home of one of Nebraska's most important public servants, George W. Norris, students learn about his life, achievements, and how the work of public servants from almost a century ago can still impact Nebraskans today! 

This program is made up of two lessons that can be taken together or separately.

- Lesson 1: How did Norris become a public servant? (30 min)

 This lesson focuses on public service, what public servants can do for their communities, and the experiences that made George Norris such a great public servant.

- Lesson 2:  What did Norris accomplish as a public servant? (30 min)

This lesson highlights George Norris's legacy, accomplishments, and long-term impact as a public servant while also teaching about rural electrification and the importance of electricity in our lives.

Program Details

Format

Welcome (virtually) to the Senator George Norris State Historic Site! Students will connect via Google Meets, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams with a History Nebraska Educator at the George Norris House in McCook, Nebraska. Together we investigate George Norris’s life as a public servant through primary sources such as photos, objects, and artifacts from George Norris's home. This program is designed for elementary school students to explore famous Nebraskans and how public service positively impacts our communities.

Lesson Details:
- Lesson Timing: 30 min (Each)
- Prep Timing (Optional): 10-30 minutes
- Post Lesson Activity Timing (Optional): 20-30 min

Objectives

Lesson 1: Students will learn about public service and how public servants benefit their communities using George Norris as an example of an exceptional public servant.

Lesson 2: Students will explore Norris's legacy and how his accomplishments benefited Nebraskans of the past and still benefit Nebraskans today.
